Treatments For A Stammer
Are you somebody who has a stammer? My name is Stephen Hill and I had a stammer problem which started when I was aged four. I had to endure a frustrating 18 years having the stammer before finally managing to achieve total fluency. This article is about the types of speech therapy that are available for stammering.
After my stammer developed, my parents decided that I needed to attend some sort of speech therapy. So what forms of therapy did you attend Steve? All sorts - every sort! Some of therapy were on a group basis and others on a 1-to-1 basis. Over the years I have been given a lot of information and advice with regards to overcoming the stammer. These are some of them:
slowing down the speed of my speech
costal breathing
prolonging each word or sound
taking a deep breath before I started speaking
I had started in the class which is sometimes referred to as preschool stammering. I was very young to attend stammering speech therapy and my parents were reassured that most people who stammer in childhood soon grow out of it. Well for whatever reason, I was one of those who continued well into my adult life.
I grew older and then joined the class known as childhood stammering. I kept on attending speech and language therapy despite the lack of progress that I was making. I guess I continued to go to keep my parents happy. This had little effect on my fluency and it has to be stated, that I really did not want to attend these anti stammering sessions. So why was? It was mainly due to the fact that I knew that these therapists had not had a stammer and that for this reason they could not truly understand what I was going through.
I then progressed to the class called, adult stammering. I now decided that speech therapy was not really working for me and seeked alternative stammering treatment.
I decided to try my own form of stammering help. There were times when I could actually speak quite well; despite the fact that I had a stammer. As an example when I was drunk, I spoke superbly. This was possibly because of the additional confidence the alcohol seemed to give me.
After nearly a year I managed to overcome stammering and eradicate the stammer once and for all. As a career I now help other people to stop stammering.
Speech Therapy For Stammering And Stuttering
It is believed that as much as one in every hundred adults in the UK have a stammer or stutter. I would guess that the majority of these people have attempted to overcome the speech impediment at some stage of their life. This is what they may have found:
Traditional speech therapy
Speech therapy is where the majority of people who stutter will start when trying to improve their speech. I myself, attended speech therapy from the age of five, I continued attending until the age of eighteen. Thirteen years and I still had the stutter, that was successful!
The advice I had been given at speech therapy was basically:
speak slowly
take a deep breath before you speak
accept your stutter
I am sorry but that advice is just not good enough.
Group stuttering speech courses
There are now a number of private speech courses that offer stuttering/stammering help and are run on a group basis. In my opinion these are of more value than traditional speech therapy as at least the aim of the course is to eradicate the stutter. Speech therapy is more of controlling and accepting the stutter.
One to one speech courses
There are also one to one speech courses available. I personally believe that this is the best form of stuttering therapy as each person will have their own individual stutter and needs.
Stuttering self help dvd and ebook
For people who would prefer a self help form of stuttering therapy, there are now stuttering dvds and ebooks available. Whichever form of stuttering treatment you choose it is essential that you work hard to practice the techniques.
With regards to the practice it is without doubt that the more the merrier is the way to go. There is a speech centre in the UK which is called The How To Stop Stuttering Centre and this is some where that people can obtain a set of stuttering cure techniques that work.
Alternative Health Therapy For Stammering And Stuttering
OK, so you have tried the more traditional forms of speech and language therapy in your quest to eradicate your stutter but despite your best efforts it has not helped you to achieve your goal of fluency. So what are the available options now? Where now should or could you turn to continue your attempts to stop stuttering?
Before I continue to answer these questions I will introduce myself. My name is Stephen Hill and I am a speech coach from the UK who specialises in helping people who have a stutter or stammer to attain fluency. I am not a speech and language therapist and I do not want to be one. I offer an alternative therapy for stuttering and one that works.
I developed a speech impediment, a stutter, when I was a young boy. I attended speech and language therapy via my local hospital. Even though it was of use it never offered me the opportunity to eradicate the stutter.
The majority of the speech and language therapists were nice enough people and certainly tried their best to help me; it was just that the training that they had been provided with was less than adequate.
I was particularly frustrated at one particular speech and language therapy session; it was with a therapist who I did not really get on with; he was rather aggressive and very impatient. He stated that there was not a known cure for stuttering. I replied:
“Fair enough. So what are you or the profession of speech and language therapy doing to find a cure?”
Speech therapist:
“Ermm, well nothing”
Me
“OK, that’s all very positive! NOT!”
For me the above example summed up my experience of speech therapy; I can only hope that the service has improved since my day!
I was eventually able to realise my dream of overcoming my stutter when I was aged 22 and as a career I now help other people to achieve fluency.
As stated earlier I offer the alternative therapy for stammering and stuttering.
I have a website at http://www.stutter-cure.com which has information about the types of therapy that I offer.

Steve Hill, The How To Stop Stuttering Centre
The How To Stop Stammering Center
Do you have a stutter or stammer? Are you searching for “fluency techniques” that will help you to stop stuttering? If you have answered these questions in the positive then this article may well be of benefit to you.
The How To Stop Stuttering Centre was established in 1996 by Steve Hill. Steve is a person who developed a stutter when he was a four year old boy and who managed to eradicate his stutter when he was aged twenty-two. Steve states:
“To achieve fluency is far from easy and anybody who is looking for some sort of magic potion or magic pill that they merely swallow to enable them to “stop stuttering” will be left disappointed. For people who are more than happy to work extremely hard to eradicate their stutter then fluency is readily attainable.
Steve mainly helps people by running one-to-one speech courses. The courses are held in the centre of England in a city called Birmingham. These specialist stuttering courses are held over a 2, 3 or 5 day period with each day lasting approximately three and a half hours.
Steve also offers alternative stuttering therapies to the speech course. These include a DVD, an audio book and an e-book. All of these products include full descriptions of each of the techniques that are required to achieve fluency.
To date Steve has helped people from many different countries including England, New Zealand, Australia, India, America and Canada.
Steve has appeared in a number of national newspapers including the Daily Telegraph and the Guardian.
It is suggested that out of all of the people that suffer with stuttering there are three times as many men as women that have this form of speech impediment. The stuttering centre in the UK helps all people to achieve fluency whether they are adults or children, women or men.
If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact the stuttering centre.
